Get Free: Gender Liberation through Art & Activism (Group 4)

Are you concerned about how women, men, and/or queer people are treated in your home community or around the world? Have you ever been personally told that you can’t do something because of your gender? If so, this course on gender justice, art, and activism may be right for you! Get Free: Gender Liberation through Art & Activism is a week-long workshop that investigates how gender is defined, practiced, and policed on local and global scales. You will use a variety of art practices such as spoken word/slam poetry, graffiti, print-making, soundscapes, and painting/drawing to explore your personal relationship with gender and analyze how cisgender, trans, and genderqueer communities are controlled by individuals, societies, and governments. You will confront gender oppressions in education, the workplace, and other areas, and use intersectional feminist and queer activist strategies in order to make art that can intervene into these injustices. Come prepared to think critically, form community, and take action on issues that you care about!

  1. Other potential titles:

Feminist AF: Gender Liberation through Art & Activism
From Teen Vogue to Thailand: Gender Liberation through Art & Activism
Gender Outlaws: Global Gender Justice through Visual and Performing Arts

  2. I think this title and the 4th option, Gender Outlaws, are good for describing the course.

  3. The only thing I might add is a brief description of the types of gender inequities we'll discuss like those in the workplace, education, etc. We could also state the topics for each day.

  4. Yeah! That's a great idea in re: addressing the inequities specifically -- I also like the first and fourth title the best.

  5. Hello Sara and Alex,
I love what you have been working on here. I have two suggestions:
-Could you add "global" to your course title? We want to make sure we are transparent enough about the global aspects involved in the course.
-Could you choose only one art form from the beginning? Because of time constraints (only 4 days to work on this) and the need to order supplies soon (we cannot order supplies for all of the art forms you suggest), it would be great if you decide on one art form.

  6. Hi Vesna,

Sure, we can stick "Global" in front of "Gender Liberation" easily enough. As for the art forms - is it alright if we keep a performing arts AND visual arts focus? For performing arts (probably slam/spoken word) we don't need anything except the technology that should already be in the classroom & paper/pens. Sara, what materials would you like them to order for your area of expertise?

    1. Alex, it is perfectly okay if you keep those two art forms. My main concern was in terms of supplies and the possible constraints we might face if we choose too many different art forms that require various types of supplies. I will be sending out the form for the supplies in a few days. The plan about the course title sounds good! Thanks for checking in!

  7. My only suggestion would be to make the description a little more succinct. I'm just thinking about the students and how closely they will read the description.

  8. I just typed a long, supportive message and the page froze so sorry this one might not be quite as long--

This class seriously sounds incredible and I am actually a bit upset I won't be able to sit in on the class! How exciting-- I genuinely believe this course will open the hearts and minds of your students. Some of them may have been waiting for a course like this for some time now-- some explanation of their lives and gender in society and such. I think your description does a great job of limiting jargon and addressing the students in a relatable manner. I think Rachel and I should actually change our description to better match this approach! Good luck! Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. I also think the description is great. I like how it has a tone of
..."Come check this out, work hard, learn and create!" Very to the point.
